The next mega-retailer enters the CBD market – Kroger Co will open 945 stores in 17 US states!
The US retail giant Kroger Co announced on June 11 that it wanted to enter the mega-market CBD. First, the company would offer CBD-containing skincare products such as creams, balms, oils, etc. (called topicals) in 945 stores.
And Kroger Co is not a small mom and pop shop – the company made $ 121 billion in sales last year alone, making it one of the largest US retailers in the United States.
Kroger Co plans to distribute these CBD products initially in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
We can well imagine that Kroger Co is getting into the CBD dietary supplements area when there is more regulatory clarity and a dosing framework from the FDA. On May 31, the FDA hold a first hearing to get more background information from the industry about CBD products. More than 100 people accepted the invitation and were actively involved in the ten-hour hearing.
And Kroger Co is not the only retailer that wants to gain a foothold in the big CBD market: Walgreens already sells CBD-containing products in 1,500 stores. In addition, the US pharmacy chain CVS with over 800 branches.
We look forward to seeing when the next retail chains, such as Walmart will go into the big business.
